
Lorraine M. Smith, MD, MPH, FACS is a board certified Otolaryngologist (Ear, Nose and Throat specialist) in the Cedars-Sinai Medical Group.
Dr. Smith received her Bachelor's degree from the Howard University College of Liberal Arts and her Medical degree from the Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC. She completed an internship in General Surgery at the Howard University Hospital, and her residency in Otolaryngology at the Charles R. Drew University/Martin Luther King Medical Center. Post-residency, Dr. Smith earned a Master's degree in Public Health (MPH) at UCLA, where she also completed a fellowship in Medical Education.
She spent the last few years teaching Otolaryngology to medical students and residents, while developing expertise in the care of Pediatric Otolaryngology patients there and in her Gardena private practice. Her commitment to excellence is reflected in her receipt of numerous academic and community awards, most recently the "Award for Excellence in Medical Education" from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She is an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA - Department of Surgery and the Charles R. Drew University - Department of Otolaryngology.
Dr. Smith holds professional memberships in multiple local and national organizations committed to advancing the care of Otolaryngology patients and medical care in California. These include the American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the National Medical Association, the California Medical Association and the Los Angeles Otolaryngology Medical Society, the Los Angeles County Medical Association. She is also a member of the Society of University Otolaryngologists.
While Dr. Smith's clinical interests include the care of patients with Pediatric and General Otolaryngology problems. She is skilled in parotid, thyroid and minimally invasive parathyroid surgery. Dr. Smith's research interests involve the effect of testosterone on the larynx and voice in surgically menopausal women, aggressive thyroid cancers, health manpower issues for underserved communities and the barriers to care for African Americans with head and neck cancer. She has articles in several peer-reviewed publications, including Topics in Emergency Medicine, ENT Journal and Cellular and Molecular Biology.
Dr. Smith is also interested in using technology to improve the delivery of healthcare and as such has worked with the Drew Urban Telemedicine Center of Excellence in its efforts to improve the delivery of health to urban communities.
