Social Work/Marriage and Family Therapy Internship

Description

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences offers a challenging post-masters training internship in clinical social work and marriage and family therapy. Since its inception some 30 years ago, the department has been a leader in integrating clinical social work and marriage and family therapy into a diverse and intensive training program. We encourage our interns to participate in training and treatment in individual, group and family therapy modalities. They benefit from training opportunities in our Outpatient Clinic, our Intensive Outpatient Programs, Dual Diagnosis programs and Inpatient Psychiatric Unit.

Given the opportunities for clinical training at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, it's not surprising that the department has maintained one of the finest post-masters training programs on the West Coast. The training program employs a well-rounded approach that integrates psychodynamic, developmental and family systems theories. We offer in-depth training in CBT and DBT therapies as well as evaluation/assessment, diagnosis and a broad range of psychopathology. The multidisciplinary character of the clinic affords the trainee opportunities to work with professionals from several disciplines including psychiatry, psychology and pharmacy.

  • Seminars in dynamic individual, family and group theory and practice
  • Seminars on child development and psychopathology
  • Special seminars on dreams, termination, psychopharmacology and art therapy
  • Initial evaluations using the biopsychosocial approach, outcome measurement, and structured interviewing.
  • Psychotherapy Training: Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioral and Dialectical Behavioral Therapies. Group, Couples and Family Therapy.
  • Supervised observation of senior staff in evaluation and therapy sessions
  • Clinical Supervision (both individual and group) at a minimum of 1 hour for every 10 hours of direct service
  • Daily interdisciplinary team meetings
  • Specialty clinics in: Anxiety Disorders, Mood Disorders, Psychotic Disorders and Bipolar/Personality Disorders

Start Date and Length of Training

The training begins the day after Labor Day and runs through the end of August every year. We require a minimum commitment of at least 30 hours per week spread across four days, although we prefer 40 hours per week spread across five days for the most enriched training. There is a stipend of $400 per month for full time and $300 per month for ¾ time. We accept applications until June 30, arrange interviews in July and announce our decisions by July 30. The training program is one-year duration. Opportunities exist for the exceptional trainee to add one more year to the initial training.
