Charles F. Simmons, Jr., MD is Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics and Director of the Division of Neonatology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Simmons holds the Ruth and Harry Roman Endowed Chair in Neonatology in honor of Larry Baum and formerly served as Director of the NICU and Associate in Medicine at Children's Hospital Boston. In addition, he was Director of the Harvard University Training Program in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at Children's Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. During the past twenty years, Dr. Simmons has trained over 100 leaders in neonatal-perinatal medicine worldwide.
Dr. Simmons is nationally recognized for his research focusing on the developmental biology of myofibroblasts, and vascular and visceral smooth muscle. Results of these studies will provide neonatologists new insights into the molecular mechanisms of inflammation and fibrosis, stem cell biology and premature birth. Dr. Simmons' research also focuses on analyzing data gained from genomic and proteomic studies. These insights can be used to develop new options for treating common conditions of premature babies.
Dr. Simmons received his bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and his medical degree magna cum laude from Harvard Medical School. He completed his internship and residency at Children's Hospital in Boston. Dr. Simmons was a clinical and research fellow at Children's Hospital, Boston and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
