
Sharo S. Raissi, MD is Director of Thoracic Aortic Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute. Board certified in general surgery, cardiothoracic surgery and surgical critical care, Dr. Raissi is a leader in the advancement of aortic surgery and minimally invasive cardiac surgery. He specializes in the treatment of aortic disease associated with bicuspid aortic valves, Marfan's syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and other connective tissue disorders.
As Director of Thoracic Aortic Research, Dr. Raissi has conducted research resulting in FDA approval of gel-coated and collagen impregnated Dacron grafts. He was the principal investigator for studies on the use of bio glue in acute aortic dissection, also receiving FDA approval. Dr. Raissi's current research includes bicuspid aortic valve gene expression studies and investigation of robotic surgery techniques in the treatment of aortic disease.
Dr. Raissi graduated from State University of New York (SUNY), Downstate School of Medicine. He completed postgraduate study in surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. While at Mount Sinai, as the first Chief Resident in Dr. Randall Griepp's aortic surgery program, Dr. Raissi refined various aortic surgery techniques. During this time he developed the open anastomosis technique, which is the standard of care for resection of aneurysms of the ascending aorta and aortic arch.
