Eleftherios C. Vamvakas, MD, PhD

Director, Clinical Pathology; Transfusion Medicine

Stephen C. Vamvakas, MD, PhD is Director of Clinical Pathology in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Cedars-Sinai. Board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, and in transfusion medicine, Dr. Vamvakas specializes in transfusion medicine and is an internationally recognized authority in this area, frequently invited to lecture around the world.

Dr. Vamvakas has written in excess of 50 scientific articles for peer-reviewed publications and has authored more than 60 book chapters, reviews and journal supplements, as well as two books on various aspects of transfusion medicine with a focus on immunomodulation. He is an active member of many professional organizations, is on the editorial board of several transfusion medicine journals, and is a frequent reviewer for several additional journals. Dr. Vamvakas participates as a Scientific Advisory Board member for transfusion medicine research.

Dr. Vamvakas received his medical degree from National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. He subsequently received a master's in public health (MPH) from Harvard University, and a masters in public administration (MPA) and doctorate degrees in Health Services Management and Policy Analysis from the Wagner School of Public Service, New York University. He completed a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at New York University Medical Center, followed by clinical and research fellowships in transfusion medicine at the Mayo Foundation in Rochester
